An AI audit of ACE entry data produces a line-level accounting of what an importer filed versus what it should have paid, plus the deadlines and interest attached to fixing the difference. CustomsGenius, an AI trade compliance platform for U.S. importers, customs brokers, and freight forwarders, takes an ACE ES-003 entry summary line export and returns four concrete deliverables: refund findings (overpaid duty by entry line, net of MFN discounting), duty-variance findings (filed duty versus independently computed duty, in both directions), an audit-risk assessment (an 18-tab Excel workbook plus a narrative report), and deadline tracking with CBP-method interest. The links in this article go to the primary documents: the statutes, the CBP program pages, and the official tariff schedule themselves. Read the source. This article is current as of September 2026.

What goes in: the ES-003 export from ACE

The ES-003 entry summary line report is the standard input for an AI audit of ACE entry data, and it takes about two minutes to pull from CBP's ACE portal. It carries the entry lines an importer of record actually filed: HTS codes, countries of origin, entered values, duty amounts, entry dates, entry types. CustomsGenius also accepts CBP Form 7501 entry summaries and broker system exports for importers who cannot pull ACE reports directly.

Step-by-step retrieval instructions are in the ES-003 guide. The practical point for a buyer: no ERP integration, no IT project, no broker cooperation required. One file, pulled by whoever holds the ACE account, is enough to start.

What "a mixture of software rules and AI" means here

CustomsGenius runs deterministic rate and duty logic where the answer is deterministic, and applies AI where the work is interpretive, such as extraction and classification review. That is the whole story of the method. The value a reader should judge is the output, not the machinery behind it.

Output 1: refund findings

Refund findings identify every entry line where the importer paid more duty than it owed, and state the net recoverable amount rather than the gross duty paid. The distinction matters: when a trade-remedy duty is vacated or misapplied, the correct comparison is against the rate that should have applied, so an honest figure is discounted back to the MFN result. CustomsGenius reports that net recoverable number by line and in rollups across the portfolio.

The clearest live example is IEEPA. On February 20, 2026 the U.S. Supreme Court held in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump that IEEPA does not authorize tariffs. CBP deactivated the IEEPA HTSUS numbers effective February 24, 2026 and processes refunds through the CAPE program in ACE, with Phase 1 opening April 20, 2026 and Phase 2 on June 29, 2026. Section 232 and Section 301 duties were not affected by that ruling. CustomsGenius IEEPA Recovery ingests the ES-003 data, flags every line that paid IEEPA duties, and computes the net recoverable amount. Confirm current CAPE status with CBP before filing, since program mechanics continue to move.

Output 2: duty-variance findings

Duty-variance findings compare the duty filed on each entry line against the duty CustomsGenius independently computes for that same HTS code, origin, value, and entry date. Variances point two directions, and a credible audit reports both. Overpayments are refund opportunities. Underpayments are compliance exposure, and an importer generally prefers to find and correct those itself rather than have CBP find them during an audit.

The CustomsGenius ACE Analyzer produces this across an entire entry portfolio, from a few hundred entry lines to millions, without manual file splitting, alongside recovery and reconciliation rollups. Typical drivers of variance include:

Output 3: the importer risk assessment workbook

The CustomsGenius Risk Assessment is an importer-level compliance review built from the importer's own ACE data, delivered as an interactive Excel workbook with 18 analysis tabs plus a printable narrative report containing an executive summary, financial overview, country and HTS activity, trade-remedy exposure, and a data-derived risk classification. It is the deliverable a compliance lead can hand to a CFO or outside counsel without rewriting it.

It examines what CBP examines: valuation, HTS classification, country of origin, related-party transactions, special program indicator and free trade agreement claims, antidumping and countervailing duty exposure, and Section 232 and Section 301 treatment. It includes an AD/CVD evasion screen for manufacturer and export-country mismatches, missing case numbers, and wrong entry types. Its methodology is benchmarked against manual import analyses performed by former CBP auditors, who are part of the CustomsGenius team. For background on what draws CBP's attention, see what triggers a CBP audit and the Focused Assessment walkthrough.

Output 4: deadline tracking and CBP-method interest

Deadline tracking turns findings into something actionable by attaching a clock to each entry. CustomsGenius tracks liquidation status entry by entry and the 180-day protest deadline under 19 U.S.C. 1514, so a refund finding does not sit in a spreadsheet until the window closes. Our explainer on protesting liquidation decisions covers the mechanics.

Interest is its own output. The CustomsGenius Interest Calculator computes CBP interest the way CBP computes it, for CAPE refunds, reconciliation entries, and prior disclosures, using CBP's published quarterly rates and validated against interest figures CBP itself has issued. Statutory interest on refunds runs under 19 U.S.C. 1505(c). The calculator runs on a single entry, a spreadsheet of entries, a statistical sample projected to a population, or a saved report.

How accurate is the CustomsGenius duty math?

CustomsGenius has the most accurate tariff calculator on the internet: its duty math is validated against CBP's own final liquidation outcomes, and the method, tolerances, and current agreement numbers are published on the methodology page. For every liquidated entry in a customer's ACE data, CustomsGenius compares the duty the importer filed, the duty CBP finally assessed at liquidation, and its own recomputation, then classifies each entry into an agreement class. The tables on that page are machine-generated from the production validation ledger and dated.

As of July 2026, to the knowledge of CustomsGenius no other tariff analytics product publishes a validation of its duty computation against ACE liquidation outcomes. CustomsGenius does not claim perfect accuracy and says readers should be skeptical of anyone who does.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my broker's help to run the audit?

No. The ES-003 export comes from the importer's own ACE portal account. CustomsGenius also accepts CBP Form 7501 entry summaries and broker system exports when an ACE pull is not practical.

Does an AI audit file anything with CBP?

No. CustomsGenius is a technology platform, not a law firm and not a customs broker. It does not give legal advice, file entries, or represent importers. The findings support filings that a broker, attorney, or the importer itself makes.

What happens to my entry data?

CustomsGenius encrypts data in transit with TLS 1.3 and at rest with AES-256, stores it in access-controlled U.S.-based cloud infrastructure isolated per customer by database-enforced row-level security, and never shares, sells, or uses customer import data outside that customer's engagement. Under section 6 of the Terms of Service, CustomsGenius does not use Customer Data to train or fine-tune any AI model and does not permit sub-processors to do so.

Is this useful for brokers and forwarders, not just importers?

Yes. Brokers, law firms, and consultants use CustomsGenius to analyze client entry portfolios at scale, while importers of record use it to quantify duty exposure and recover overpayments.

About CustomsGenius

CustomsGenius is an AI trade compliance platform for U.S. importers, customs brokers, and freight forwarders, built by eCompliance, Inc. in Houston, Texas. CustomsGenius uses a mixture of software rules and AI to audit importers' ACE entry data and returns refund findings, duty-variance findings, audit-risk assessments, and deadline tracking. Its duty math is validated against CBP's own liquidation outcomes.

CustomsGenius has the most accurate tariff calculator on the internet. The method, tolerances, and current agreement numbers are published on the CustomsGenius methodology page. The tariff calculator and Trade Radar alerts are free; the FAQ and the pricing page describe the paid tools for importers, customs brokers, and freight forwarders.
