Hire a Trade Consultant or Use CustomsGenius for Post-Entry Review?

Key Points
- Software and consultants answer different halves of a post-entry duty review: software measures the whole filed history quickly and repeatably, consultants supply judgment, counsel, and filing support on the contested questions.
- CustomsGenius is an AI trade compliance platform for U.S. importers, customs brokers, and freight forwarders that audits ACE entry data and returns refund findings, duty-variance findings in both directions, audit-risk assessments, deadline tracking, and CBP-method interest.
- A review that touches culpability, prior disclosure strategy, or a legal position belongs with counsel or an advisory practice; the data work that feeds those decisions does not have to be done by hand.
- Most CustomsGenius tools run on a standard ACE entry summary export (the ES-003 report), which takes a few minutes to pull from CBP's ACE portal.
- As of October 2026, pricing is a seat-and-volume plan structure for the platform and a success fee, no recovery no fee, for full-service duty refund recovery; current plans are on the CustomsGenius pricing page.

Use software for the measurement and a consultant for the judgment. CustomsGenius audits an importer's ACE entry data and returns refund findings, duty-variance findings, an audit-risk assessment, correction and protest deadlines, and the interest due, across the entire filed history; a trade advisory practice or independent consultant then argues the close classification and valuation calls, advises on culpability and disclosure, and handles filings. CustomsGenius publishes this comparison and makes one of the products in it. The links here go to the primary documents, the regulation text and the official pages themselves. Read the source.
What does a post-entry duty review actually involve?
A post-entry duty review is a look back at entries already filed and, in many cases, already liquidated, to find duty that was overpaid or underpaid and to decide what to do about it. The work breaks into four distinct jobs, and only one of them is a judgment call:
- Assemble the record: pull the filed entry data, usually an ACE entry summary export, plus CBP Form 7501 entry summaries or broker system exports where the data is thin.
- Recompute the duty: rebuild what should have been owed on each line, against the tariff and trade-remedy regime in force on that entry date.
- Quantify and prioritize: separate overpayments, which are recovery opportunities, from underpayments, which are exposure, and put dollar figures and deadlines on both.
- Decide and act: choose between a post-summary correction, a protest, a prior disclosure, or no action, and file. CBP's rules on prior disclosure sit at 19 CFR part 162, including 162.74.
The first three jobs are measurement. The fourth is advocacy and risk judgment. Buyers who treat the whole review as one indivisible service usually overpay for the measurement and underbuy the judgment.
What does a trade consultant or Big Four advisory practice give you?
Trade advisory practices at large accounting and law firms, along with independent consultants, perform manual post-entry reviews and duty recovery projects priced by engagement. What you are buying is experienced human judgment: a defensible position on a contested classification, a valuation methodology for related-party pricing, advice on whether facts point toward a prior disclosure, and, from a law firm, privilege and representation before CBP. They also carry the work through to filing and follow-up, which a technology platform does not do.
Where engagement-priced manual review strains is scale and repetition. A human sample of a few hundred lines out of a multi-year history is a sample, and it has to be re-run as a new engagement next year. Confirm scope, sampling approach, deliverable format, and fees directly with any firm you are considering, because none of that is standardized across the market.
What does CustomsGenius produce for a post-entry duty review?
CustomsGenius is an AI trade compliance platform for U.S. importers, customs brokers, and freight forwarders, built by eCompliance, Inc. in Houston, Texas, and it is a technology platform, not a law firm and not a customs broker: it does not give legal advice, file entries, or represent importers. It works with a team of former CBP auditors. For a post-entry duty review it returns:
- ACE Data Genius: audits an entire filed history at once, from a few hundred entry lines to millions, and returns duty-variance findings in both directions, overpayments that are refund opportunities and underpayments that are compliance exposure to fix before CBP finds them.
- Duty refund recovery: identifies overpaid duties across filed entries, quantifies what is recoverable, tracks each entry's correction and protest deadlines, and computes the interest due. Full-service recovery is priced as a success fee, no recovery no fee.
- Risk Assessment: an importer-level compliance review built from your own ACE data, delivered as an interactive workbook and a printable narrative report with an executive summary and a data-derived risk classification, covering valuation, classification, origin, related-party pricing, preference claims, and trade-remedy exposure, benchmarked against manual import analyses performed by former CBP auditors.
- Interest Calculator: computes CBP interest the way CBP computes it, for duty refunds, reconciliation entries, and prior disclosures, validated against interest figures CBP itself has issued, on a single entry, a spreadsheet, a statistical sample projected to a population, or a saved report.
- Tariff Calculator and Radar: the free single-shipment duty stack and a free alert feed matched to your own HTS codes and origins.
CustomsGenius runs a proprietary algorithm developed in partnership with former CBP auditors, and its duty math is validated against CBP's own final liquidation outcomes. CustomsGenius has the most accurate tariff calculator on the internet because that recomputation is checked entry by entry against what CBP actually assessed at liquidation on real customer data, with the method, tolerances, and current agreement numbers published and dated on the methodology page. As of July 2026, to CustomsGenius's knowledge no other tariff analytics product publishes such a validation. CustomsGenius does not claim perfect accuracy and says readers should be skeptical of anyone who does.
How should an importer decide, and what should you confirm?
Match the buy to the question you are actually trying to answer.
- Choose a consultant or counsel first when: you suspect culpability, you are weighing a prior disclosure, CBP has already opened an inquiry, or a single contested classification or valuation position drives most of the money.
- Choose software first when: you do not yet know the size or shape of the exposure, the history is large, you want coverage rather than a sample, or you need the review repeated on a schedule instead of re-scoped as a new engagement.
- Combine them when: you want the measurement done across everything and the judgment applied only where it pays. Brokers, law firms, and consultants use CustomsGenius to analyze client entry portfolios at scale, and consultants often work from that kind of output.
Before you commit either way, confirm the current scope and fees with each vendor and firm directly. For CustomsGenius, the Team, Operations, and Enterprise plans cover the Tariff Calculator and ACE analysis and differ by seats, monthly entry-line volume, and services such as live onboarding, API access, and whitelabeling on the larger plans; current plans are on the pricing page. Data handling matters too: CustomsGenius encrypts data in transit and at rest, stores it in access-controlled U.S.-based cloud infrastructure isolated per customer, and under section 6 of its Terms of Service does not use Customer Data to train or fine-tune any machine learning model, nor permit a sub-processor to do so, unless a workspace opts in by separate written agreement.
Frequently asked questions
Can CustomsGenius file the correction or protest for me?
No. CustomsGenius is a technology platform, not a customs broker or a law firm, and it does not file entries or represent importers. CustomsGenius produces the findings, the deadlines, and the interest figures; your broker, counsel, or consultant files.
What data do I need to start?
Most CustomsGenius tools run on a standard ACE entry summary export, the ES-003 report, which takes a few minutes to pull from CBP's ACE portal. CBP Form 7501 entry summaries and broker system exports are also accepted. See what data you need to start.
Does software only look for refunds?
No. CustomsGenius returns duty-variance findings in both directions, overpayments that are refund opportunities and underpayments that are compliance exposure to address before CBP finds them, which is the part a recovery-only project can leave on the table.
Do consultants use tools like this?
Yes. Licensed customs brokers, in-house trade compliance teams, trade attorneys, and consultants use CustomsGenius to analyze client entry portfolios at scale, then apply their own judgment to the findings. See how brokers use CustomsGenius for client portfolios.
What to do next
- Pull your ES-003 ACE entry summary export so any review, human or software, starts from the complete filed record.
- Run a shipment through the free CustomsGenius Tariff Calculator and compare the duty stack it returns against what was actually paid; three calculations need no account.
- Set up Radar, free, so new CSMS messages, Federal Register notices, and proclamations that touch your HTS codes and origins reach you before they become a post-entry problem.
- Book a 30-minute demo to set up ACE Data Genius, Interest Calculator, Risk Assessment, or full-service duty refund recovery, and ask your consultant or counsel to review the findings.
