Case Study: Why CustomsGenius is Going Deep on CargoWise
CargoWise is the operating system for a significant share of the customs brokerage industry. It manages entries, stores documentation, tracks compliance workflows, and serves as the system of record for brokerages ranging from mid-size regional firms to global logistics providers. When we set out to build CustomsGenius, we knew that any serious refund recovery tool had to meet brokers where their data already lives. That meant CargoWise.
The Data Problem
Most brokerages that want to identify IEEPA refund-eligible entries start with a data export. They pull entry summaries from CargoWise, drop them into a spreadsheet, and begin the slow work of manual review. The process is familiar, but it introduces friction at every step. Exports require formatting. Spreadsheets require column mapping. Tariff cross-referencing requires lookups. By the time a broker has identified a handful of refund-eligible entries, days or weeks have passed.
The bottleneck is not the broker's expertise. It is the distance between where the data sits and where the analysis happens.
What the Integration Does
Our CargoWise integration eliminates that distance. CustomsGenius connects directly to CargoWise data exports, ingesting entry summaries, line-item detail, HTS codes, duty amounts, and supporting documentation in their native format. There is no reformatting, no column mapping, and no manual upload step. The data flows from the broker's system of record into our analysis engine as-is.
Once ingested, CustomsGenius cross-references every line item against current IEEPA tariff provisions, flags entries with refund potential, calculates estimated recovery amounts, and generates filing-ready post-summary correction packets. The broker reviews the output, makes the professional judgment call, and files.
Why It Matters
Brokers using CargoWise told us the same thing again and again: the refund opportunity is real, but the operational cost of pursuing it manually is too high relative to the return on any individual entry. The math only works at scale, and scale requires automation.
By building a deep, native integration with CargoWise rather than a generic file upload, we reduce the time from data export to filing packet from weeks to hours. Brokers can serve more clients, review more entries, and recover more money without adding headcount. The integration does not change what brokers do. It changes how much of it they can do.
We chose to go deep on CargoWise because that is where the industry's data lives. Building on top of the broker's existing workflow, rather than asking them to adopt a new one, is the fastest path to real-world impact.
